A 27 year old New Yarmouth from 1994, a high-proof bruiser turned elegant, with salted caramel, vanilla, cocoa, wood spice and dried fruit, a single cask bottled by Distilia at a commanding 67.1%.
Description
New Yarmouth's 1994 vintage is the stuff of legend among high-ester collectors, and this single cask, bottled by Distilia in its Golden Age of Piracy series as Woodes Rogers, shows why. The Clarendon-parish pot still distillery is better known for fruit-bomb funk, yet 27 years of tropical ageing has reshaped this one into something altogether more refined.
Distilled on the pot still from molasses and matured in ex-bourbon casks, it is bottled unsweetened at a commanding 67.1%. Rather than the expected fruit-ester barrage, it leans into salted caramel, vanilla, cocoa, dried fruit and warm wood spice, the palate staying spicy, woody and caramel-rich and the finish long with dried fruit and barrel. The high proof is carried with surprising poise, the oiliness coating the palate. A reference-level old New Yarmouth that trades the usual fruit for elegance and depth, a slow, contemplative sipper for seasoned drinkers.
