Description
This Single Vintage from Diplomatico, also sold under the Botucal name, comes from Destilerias Unidas in Venezuela and carries a 2001 vintage with thirteen years of age. Unusually for the Spanish style it leans on pot-still spirit alongside the usual column rum, giving it more body than a typical light ron, and it is finished in sherry casks for added richness.
Molasses-based and sweetened, it is unashamedly a dessert rum: the nose offers caramel, fruitcake and figs, the palate runs sweet and caramelised with banana and dates, and the finish brings toffee, spice and a green-pepper lift. The sherry casks add plush dried-fruit depth on top of the brand's signature softness. The honest read is comfort over nuance, an intense, candied, easy-drinking sipper for anyone with a sweet tooth and a relaxed evening in mind.
