Dievole makes this single-vineyard Chianti Classico Gran Selezione from Sangiovese grown on macigno sandstone in Tuscany. Aged seventeen months in oak, it is a structured red with cherry, plum and savoury, earthy depth.
Description
Dievole is one of Tuscany's oldest estates, set in the heart of Chianti Classico near Siena, with nearly a thousand years of winemaking behind it. This Gran Selezione comes from the single Vigna di Sessina vineyard and represents the top tier of the appellation. The vineyard sits on macigno sandstone, a sedimentary soil of sand, silt and clay that retains heat and drains water well, driving the full ripeness and concentration that Sangiovese needs for body and structure. The hillside elevation and diurnal temperature swing preserve the grape's natural acidity and aromatic lift. The wine ages seventeen months in oak, a long maturation that builds structure and integrates fine tannins through gradual oxygen exchange while adding cedar and spice. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows ripe cherry and plum with red currant, leading into tobacco, leather and a savoury, earthy depth. The palate is full-bodied and firmly structured, the tannins fine-grained and the acidity bright, driving a long, savoury finish. This is built to age and will improve over the coming years. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanted. It calls for serious red meat and game.
