Diego Magaña, son of Rioja winegrowers, makes this red from old vine Garnacha Tinta with ten months in French oak. It shows red berry, ripe cherry and a peppery, savoury character with soft tannins.
Description
Diego Magaña comes from a family of Rioja winegrowers and makes this red entirely from Garnacha Tinta. Grenache thrives on the warmer, well-drained soils of Rioja, ripening to plump red fruit and moderate tannin while keeping a peppery, savoury edge. The continental climate, with hot days and cold nights, holds the acidity that balances the grape's natural ripeness and generosity. Old vines, where Grenache shows best, give small crops of concentrated fruit and a finer texture. The wine is matured for ten months in French oak, a measured period that softens the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds a fine spice and structure while leaving the bright fruit in the lead. The colour is medium ruby. The nose is red berry and ripe cherry with black pepper, dried herbs and a touch of liquorice. The palate is medium to full bodied and supple, with soft, rounded tannins, fresh acidity and a warm, savoury finish. Serve at 16 degrees, decanting young bottles briefly. It suits roast lamb, grilled beef and game birds.
