Didier Grappe farms a tiny Ecocert estate in the Jura village of Saint-Lothain. Pif Purple is a natural, vegan red from Leon Millot and Seyve-Villard on red and grey loam, made in steel for bright red fruit and a savoury, juicy finish at 12 percent.
Description
Didier Grappe set up his estate in 2001 in Saint-Lothain, in the heart of the Jura, and works just under four hectares with Ecocert organic certification and minimal intervention. Pif Purple comes from half a hectare of these red varieties, Leon Millot and Seyve-Villard, planted on red and grey loam. The cool, continental Jura climate and the wide day-to-night temperature swing keep acidity high and the wine light at 12 percent, while the loam soils give a juicy, savoury fruit. The grapes are fermented with native yeasts and no added chemicals, and the wine is raised in stainless steel rather than oak, which keeps the fruit fresh and primary and the texture light. This is a natural, organic and vegan red made for early drinking. The wine is bright purple with aromas of red berries, cherry and plum over dried herbs, a peppery note and a touch of rhubarb. The palate is light bodied with crisp acidity, soft tannin and a juicy, savoury finish. Serve at 13 to 15 degrees, lightly chilled, in any glass. It pairs with charcuterie, roast chicken and lighter dishes.
