Les Insouciantes is a natural Jura red from organic grower Didier Grappe, blending Pinot Noir, Poulsard and Trousseau with a little Chardonnay. Low in alcohol and made with minimal intervention, it shows bright red fruit and a savoury, earthy lift.
Description
Les Insouciantes is a red from Didier Grappe, an organic and natural winemaker in the Côtes du Jura in eastern France, working four hectares of certified organic land. The name, French for the unconcerned, reflects his rejection of fixed winemaking convention in favour of minimal intervention and preserving the vine in its purest state. The blend brings together the Jura's classic red grapes, Poulsard and Trousseau, with Pinot Noir and a touch of Chardonnay, all pale, thin-skinned varieties suited to the region's cool, continental climate and marl and limestone soils. The high-altitude sites and cool nights give slow ripening and high natural acidity, which keeps the wine light and fresh at 12.5 percent. Made naturally, with little or no added sulphur and ageing in barrel, the wine keeps its delicate, lifted character. The colour is pale, bright ruby. The nose shows red berries, fresh cherry and redcurrant over a savoury, earthy edge with dried herbs and a floral note. The palate is light-bodied with fine, gentle tannins, crisp acidity and a mineral finish. Serve lightly cool at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits poultry, charcuterie and mushroom dishes.
