A nineteen year old Colombian single cask from Dictador at cask strength, layering roasted coffee, caramel and oak over leather and tobacco, semi sweet but well integrated at a warming 50% and built for a slow evening glass.
Description
Dictador Parrafo I Borbon 2003 is a single cask Colombian rum drawn from a 2003 vintage and bottled at cask strength, 50%, after nineteen years in ex bourbon wood. Colombian rum in the Dictador house style leans on coffee, cocoa and oak, and this stands out from the regular range as one of its more characterful, full bodied expressions.
The column still spirit has taken on a deep roast from the bourbon barrel: roasted coffee, caramel and oak lead, with leather, tobacco and warm baking spice filling out the finish. It reads as semi sweet rather than dry, but the sweetness is woven into the wood and the strength rather than sitting on top, and the alcohol is well integrated for its proof. The result is a relaxed, warming evening sipper with enough roast and spice depth to reward attention, comfortable alongside a cigar without ever turning harsh or challenging.
