Dictador Best of 1978

Dictador's Best Of series draws on very old Colombian rum from Destilería Colombiana, molasses based and column distilled in the Spanish style where the cask shapes everything over a light spirit. This 1978 single cask is among the deeply aged releases, and honey takes the front seat in a way that sets it slightly apart from the house norm.

Forty years in ex-bourbon wood has built a soft, rich character. The nose is fresh and sweet with honey and coffee, while the palate keeps that honeyed sweetness alongside an oily texture and more coffee. The finish turns oily and woody with a chocolate note. As with the rest of the range these old Dictador rums lean to the sweet side, and the sugar status here is undeclared, so the impression is mellow rather than dry. At 41% it is a gentle, slow sipper, a honey led take on very old Colombian ron for drinkers who favour the most aged bottlings.
