Kill Devil is Hunter Laing's rum line of whisky house single casks, non chill filtered and without additives. This 1998 Diamond was matured 23 years in ex-bourbon and bottled at 48.5%.
Diamond usually sits at the lighter, cleaner end of Demerara, but this long aged cask turns notably smoky and woody, almost whisky like, with the heavy oak influence dominating the expected toffee and chocolate profile. Molasses based, unsweetened and bottled at natural strength, it is an idiosyncratic single cask where decades in wood have taken the spirit in a distinctly smoky direction rather than a textbook clean Diamond.
