A natural Gevrey-Chambertin from Dominique Derain, a Pinot Noir from two small plots including vines over a hundred years old. Farmed biodynamically and made with minimal intervention, it shows ripe cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry over an earthy, peppery core.
Description
Derain Gevrey-Chambertin En Vosné is a natural Pinot Noir from Dominique Derain, a Burgundy winemaker who farms small plots biodynamically and works with minimal intervention to keep his wines pure and close to the fruit. The wine comes from two small parcels in Gevrey-Chambertin, one of very old vines over a hundred years old and one of younger plantings. Gevrey sits on limestone and marl with deeper, iron-rich clay, the fuller soils of the Côte de Nuits that give its Pinot Noir body, firm structure and a dark, earthy register. The favourable slope and the cool nights of the region hold acidity and aromatic freshness through ripening, while the centenarian vines bring low yields and depth. Vinification follows the natural path of native yeasts, gentle extraction and little added sulphur, with ageing in French oak that frames rather than marks the fruit. The colour is a bright translucent ruby. The nose shows ripe cherry, wild strawberry, raspberry and rose, with damp earth and a peppery, liquorice edge. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and sapid, the tannins fine and the finish savoury and mineral. Serve at 16 degrees and open thirty minutes ahead. Good with roast duck, beef or game.
