A cask-strength 2000 Martinique agricole from Depaz, grown on Mont Pelee’s volcanic slopes, with caramelised oak, green apple and grass turning to berries, mint and cherry, rich and dry at 58.5%.
Description
Depaz sits at the foot of Mont Pelee in northern Martinique and has distilled there since 1917, building its identity on volcanic-terroir cane and AOC agricole. This Brut de Fut 2000 was distilled from fresh cane juice on a creole column, aged more than 17 years in ex-bourbon oak, and bottled at full cask strength, 58.5%.
Long tropical ageing has taken the grassy heart of the spirit into deeper territory, the angel's share concentrating flavour so the rum shows maturity well beyond its years. The nose offers caramelised oak, green apple, grass and wood, the palate turns to dark berries with a round, surprisingly smooth body for the strength, and the finish stays herbal and minty with a cherry note over a clear agricole signature. Unsweetened and powerful, it is an older agricole for serious, unhurried sipping.
