Depaula Monastrell is winemaker Juan Antonio Ponce’s fresh, nervy take on the grape in Manchuela. Six months in foudres keep it light and bright, with ruby-red fruit, floral lift and a peppery, energetic palate well away from the variety’s heavier style.
Description
Depaula is a Monastrell from Juan Antonio Ponce, the winemaker behind the Ponce project in Manchuela, in the south-east of Castilla La Mancha. Where Monastrell is usually rich and powerful, Ponce sets out to make a fresh, nervy version, picking earlier and working gently to keep energy and lift in the wine. The grapes come from the limestone and clay soils of Manchuela, a high, continental area whose cooler nights and altitude preserve acidity and aromatic precision in a region better known for heat. Ageing is brief and gentle, six months in foudres, large old oak vats that allow slow oxygen exchange and softening without imparting oak flavour, so the focus stays on bright, unmasked fruit. The colour is a vivid ruby, and the nose is floral and red-fruited, with cherry, redcurrant and raspberry over black pepper and dried herbs. The palate is light to medium-bodied and vibrant, with crisp acidity, fine tannins and a fresh, savoury, peppery finish. Sustainably farmed and made for early drinking, it can take a slight chill. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, with roast chicken, grilled pork or vegetable dishes.
