Description
Del Maguey's Crema de Mezcal is an outlier in the range, a sweetened agave spirit rather than a straight mezcal. It blends 90% mezcal from San Luis del Rio in Oaxaca, made from Espadin, Agave angustifolia, with 10% miel de maguey, a non fermented syrup pressed from roasted agave. That syrup is what makes it a crema, soft and sweet where the village mezcals are dry.
Del Maguey was founded in 1995 by artist Ron Cooper and built the single village model, naming each mezcal for the town where Zapotec palenqueros distil it by hand. Here the San Luis del Rio base brings roasted agave and gentle smoke, while the agave honey rounds everything into a dessert leaning profile. Aromas of roasted agave, vanilla and pear give way to apple, coffee, pineapple and almond, with a sweet, smoky finish and subtle orange. Bottled at 40%.
