A 12 year old Demerara blended across Guyana’s old heritage stills, with caramel, vanilla, molasses and sweet oak, rounded and easygoing at 40%, a sweetened, dessert-leaning entry into the world of age-stated Guyanese rum.

Description
El Dorado 12 is the flagship blend from Demerara Distillers in Guyana, the sole surviving Guyanese producer and the keeper of a famous collection of heritage stills rescued from estates that closed decades ago. The wooden pot and wooden Coffey stills gathered at the Diamond distillery, several of them the last of their kind anywhere, give Demerara rum its dark, molasses-rich depth, and the El Dorado blends draw across them.
This is a molasses rum, and the 12 leans to the rounder, dessert-like end of the category: caramel, vanilla, molasses and sweet oak with a cocoa-tinged finish. It drinks smooth and easy at 40%, in good part because El Dorado has historically been a sweetened rum, so this is softer and rounder than an unsweetened single-marque Demerara. Honest framing matters, the gentle, sugary character is a feature for many buyers rather than a flaw. For drinkers stepping up from softer Spanish styles into age-stated Guyanese rum, it keeps the sweetness while adding wood and spice.
