Caramel, toffee and dried fruit over gentle oak, the 2020 release of DDL’s El Dorado 12 from the Diamond stills, an easy and approachable Demerara at 40% that opens the door to darker rum.
Description
El Dorado 12 is the everyday flagship from Demerara Distillers, the company that runs every surviving Guyanese still at Diamond. This 2020 release carries a twelve-year age statement, the youngest rum in a molasses-based blend drawn largely from the lighter Savalle column profile, the workhorse behind most of the El Dorado range.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at 40%, it leans soft and rounded, with caramel, toffee, raisin and dried fruit framed by easy oak spice. El Dorado at this level is typically dosed, so the sweetness and dessert like smoothness are part of the design rather than a dry, full-proof statement. Taken on its own terms it is a comfortable, friendly introduction to the Demerara house style and good value for the age.
