David & Nadia blend Chenin Blanc with Rhône whites in Swartland, South Africa, and age the organic wine in barrel. Aristargos shows white peach, pear and citrus with a textured, savoury depth.
Description
David and Nadia Sadie are part of the new generation of Swartland producers, working organically to a low intervention ethos. Aristargos is a barrel-aged white blend led by Chenin Blanc, with Roussanne, Semillon, Marsanne, Clairette, Viognier and others in support, from the granite and schist soils of the Swartland in the coastal region. These old, dry-farmed bush vines yield little on poor ground, and the warm but sea-cooled climate gives ripe fruit held by fresh acidity. The blend is fermented and aged in barrel, mostly older oak, so the emphasis falls on texture rather than obvious wood, while lees contact and the range of grape varieties build a layered, savoury complexity. The colour is pale gold. The nose is fragrant, with white peach, pear and melon over white flowers and honey. The palate is broad and textured, with a stony, almost saline core and a fresh, slightly nutty finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits white fish, poultry and roasted vegetables.
