A mellow 31 year old Guadeloupe agricole from Damoiseau, vintage 1953, drinking like a dessert with dried plum, dark chocolate and caramel over soft wood, gentle and sweetly fruity at a relaxed 42%.
Description
This Damoiseau Rhum Vieux Vintage 1953 is a long-aged Guadeloupe agricole from the island's largest distillery, distilled from fresh cane juice and given 31 years in ex-bourbon oak. Guadeloupe sits under the looser IGP rather than Martinique's AOC, but age of this order speaks for itself, and decades in cask have rounded the spirit into something soft and contemplative.
The column-still base has long since mellowed, the nose turning fruity and candied with banana and caramel. On the palate it leans into prunes, licorice, nuts and dark chocolate, the wood present but never sharp, with a sweet impression that comes from age rather than additive. The finish carries red fruits, dark chocolate and gentle oak. This is a dessert-leaning agricole, easy and fruit-forward, best in a relaxed glass after a meal where its softness is the point.
