A long-aged Guadeloupe agricole from Damoiseau, a 1953 vintage with thirty-one years in ex-bourbon, deep into dried fruit, banana and chocolate over smoky oak, an old and rare cane-juice rum bottled dry at 45 percent.
Description
Damoiseau, the largest distillery in Guadeloupe, bottles this from a 1953 vintage given thirty-one years in ex-bourbon, a genuinely old agricole made from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice. Guadeloupe falls under IGP rather than the Martinique AOC, but a rum aged this long is a rare survivor whatever the appellation, decades of oak having transformed the spirit.
The profile is deep and dried-fruit rich: barrel, dried fruit, blackberry and banana on the nose, a palate of dried fruit, chocolate, banana and orange, and a finish of smoky barrel, fruit and wood. The grassy cane origin has long since dissolved into oak, leaving a complex, oxidative maturity. Bottled at 45 percent and dry, it is a contemplative pour for the patient, where the chocolate, banana and smoky barrel notes are the reward of more than three decades in wood. A bottle to sip slowly and consider.
