A young, very dry Guadeloupe gold from Damoiseau at 40%, briefly aged to straw like grassy cane, young wood and papaya over a dry, woody, vegetal finish, an honest value rum more mixer than sipper.
Description
Damoiseau Gold Rum is a lightly aged agricole from Damoiseau, the largest distillery in Guadeloupe, working under the island's IGP. Distilled from fresh sugarcane juice on a column still and bottled at 40%, it sees only a short spell in wood, keeping it firmly on the young, fresh side.
The brief ageing leaves a notably dry mouthfeel and a still green character. Grass, young wood, root and papaya open the nose, the palate is woody and dry with a sharp edge, and the finish stays dry, woody and vegetal with a thread of tropical fruit. The grassy agricole notes lean toward dried straw rather than ripe fruit. An honest, dry value rum that earns its keep in cocktails and cooking and as a lively young cane spirit for everyday mixing rather than slow neat sipping.
