Damien Bastian makes this organic Savoie Pinot Noir from the Ton Rouge du Lac cuvee. Light at 11.5 percent and barrel aged, it shows fresh cherry, redcurrant and a floral, alpine freshness over cool mountain fruit.
Description
Damien Bastian works in Savoie, the alpine region of eastern France where vineyards climb the slopes above lakes and rivers on limestone and glacial moraine soils. The cool mountain climate and pronounced diurnal range give this organically farmed Pinot Noir bright acidity and a light frame, the alcohol settling at 11.5 percent. The limestone subsoil lends freshness and a mineral edge typical of the region. Short, gentle ageing in barrel rounds the texture and adds a faint savoury spice while keeping the fruit at the centre. Pinot Noir in this cool setting stays pale and perfumed rather than dense, leading with red fruit and flowers. The wine is light ruby, the nose offering fresh cherry, redcurrant and a rose petal lift, with a touch of mint and forest floor. The palate is light and juicy, the tannins fine, the finish clean and lifted by mountain acidity. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees. It pairs well with roast chicken, duck, mushroom dishes and lighter charcuterie, and can stand in for a white at the table.
