Description
The independent Hunter Laing bottled this Dailuaine, a 10 year old, distilled in 2011, bottled at 46%, one of 309 bottles. Dailuaine, whose name is Gaelic for the green vale, is a heavy, full bodied Speysider. Single malt Dailuaine is rare as an official bottling, so most come from independents.
It was worked through the big stills for a meaty, malty spirit, for a rich, meaty make that suits sherry wood. First fill bourbon gave a fuller vanilla over the robust spirit. Integration folds eugenol (clove) and vanillin (vanilla) into the malt, the heavy body fuller and richer. Most Dailuaine goes quietly into blends, a robust filler kept in part as single malt. It sits near Aberlour, in the heart of Speyside by the River Spey. The name is Gaelic for the green vale, after the hollow in which the distillery sits. Dailuaine's heavy, malty make is prized by blenders for the body it gives.
At 46% it is clean and soft. Orchard fruit, malt and a warm spice, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath it run dried fruit, malt and a savoury edge. Dried fruit, malt and a savoury oak see out the finish. This is one of Speyside's heavier single malts.
