Curii’s Una noche y un día is a young red from local Giró, the Alicante name for Garnacha, aged briefly on its lees. Fresh and fruit driven at 13.5 percent, it shows red berries, cherry and a light peppery, earthy edge.
Description
Curii was founded in 2010 by Violeta Gutiérrez de la Vega and the sommelier Alberto Redrado in Xaló, in the hills of Alicante near the Mediterranean, in a district where the Moscatel trade had long dominated over red wine. Una noche y un día is their fresh, early-drinking red, made from Giró, the local name for Garnacha, grown on limestone soils at altitude. The elevation and the wide swing between warm days and cool nights preserve acidity and aromatic lift, giving a lighter, more vibrant style than a long-aged red. The name refers to a short maceration, and the wine is then kept on its fine lees rather than in new oak. Lees ageing, where the wine rests on spent yeast cells, adds a little texture and roundness while protecting freshness and keeping the fruit to the fore. The colour is bright, translucent cherry red. The nose shows red berries, fresh cherry and plum, with red currant, white pepper and a stony, earthy note. The palate is light to medium bodied, with fine tannins, crisp acidity and a clean, juicy finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees. It pairs with charcuterie, poultry and lighter meat dishes.
