CVNE is a historic winery founded in Haro in 1879, and Cune Roble Ribera is its early drinking red from Ribera del Duero, made from Tinta del Pais, the local Tempranillo. The grapes grow on clay limestone, clay ferrous and alluvial soils under a largely Atlantic influence, conditions that keep acidity and freshness in the fruit. This is a roble style, given just five months in American oak, a short ageing that softens the tannins a little and adds a light vanilla and coconut sweetness while keeping the wine youthful and fruit forward. The brief barrel time means the oak frames rather than covers the grape, so the bright character of a fresh vintage comes through. It pours an alluring purple, with intense aromas of fresh red berries, cherry and plum lifted by a touch of sweet spice and pepper over a faintly earthy base. The palate is medium bodied and juicy, with soft tannin, lively acidity and a clean finish. Serve at 16 degrees, with no decanting needed. It is an easy, versatile red for everyday meals.
