Description
La Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España, known as CVNE, was founded in Rioja by the Asúa brothers in 1879 and remains in the same family. It was one of the first houses to bottle in the region and is best known for its reds, but this is a young, unoaked white made from Viura, the region's traditional white grape, grown organically. Viura suits Rioja's marked temperature contrasts: warm days ripen the fruit while cool nights hold the acidity, which keeps a young white like this fresh and balanced. The wine is fermented cool in stainless steel and bottled early, with no oak, to preserve primary fruit and a light floral lift. Time on the fine lees adds a subtle bready texture. The colour is pale lemon yellow. The nose is fresh, with green apple, lemon and pear over white flowers. The palate is dry and light, the acidity clean, the finish crisp with a faint doughy note. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass.
