Cuevas de Arom make As Ladieras from old-vine Garnacha in Calatayud, from vineyards over fifty years old at 800 to 950 metres. Aged twelve months in separate vessels, it is ripe yet fresh, with red fruit, pepper and a stony depth.
Description
Cuevas de Arom is a project of Bodegas Frontonio and Bodegas San Alejandro in Calatayud, Aragon, dedicated to vinifying old Garnacha vines in a traditional way. As Ladieras comes from vineyards over fifty years old planted at 800 to 950 metres above sea level. The old vines yield small crops of concentrated fruit, while the high altitude brings a wide swing between warm days and cold nights, slowing ripening and preserving acidity and aromatic freshness despite the warm regional climate. The result is a Garnacha that is ripe but fresh and elegant rather than heavy. The wine ages twelve months in separate containers, a gentle approach that lets the fruit and the stony, mineral character of the site come through without heavy oak spice. It is bright and deep in the glass, with red and dark fruit, plum, cracked pepper, dried herbs and a floral, earthy depth. The palate is rounded and fresh, with ripe but defined tannins, a savoury, mineral core and a long finish. Serve at 16 degrees. It suits roast lamb and grilled meats.
