Cuatro Rayas Cuarenta Vendimias is a Rueda Verdejo named for the late oenologist Ángel Calleja. Three months on its lees in stainless steel add texture to crisp green apple, citrus and a herbal edge, over fresh continental acidity.
Description
Cuatro Rayas is a long established winery in the D.O. Rueda in Valladolid. This single varietal Verdejo is a tribute to Ángel Calleja, the oenologist who spent forty years there and modernised the cellar. Rueda's continental climate brings hot dry summers and cold winters, and the wide day to night temperature range preserves the acidity that gives Verdejo its cut. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel at low temperature to protect the aromatics, then the wine rests three months on its fine lees in the same tanks. That lees ageing releases mannoproteins that add body and a subtle savoury weight to the mid palate while keeping the fruit fresh and the style clean. It is pale and bright with green glints. The nose is intense and fresh, with green apple, citrus and the herbal boxwood note of the grape. The palate is light and crisp, with lemon, melon and a saline, faintly bitter grip on a long dry finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It works as an aperitif and with shellfish, white fish and salads. This wine is vegan.
