Cuatro Pasos makes this Bierzo rosé from Mencía grown in the region’s coolest vineyards around Otero and Villadecanes. It is pale pink and fresh, showing strawberry, red cherry and a floral lift, with a crisp, dry, summery palate.
Description
Cuatro Pasos works in D.O. Bierzo, in north-western Castilla y León, the home of the Mencía grape. This rosé is a varietal Mencía drawn from the coolest vineyards in the appellation, between Otero and Villadecanes. Bierzo sits in a sheltered basin with slate and clay soils and an Atlantic-influenced climate, and the cooler sites used here keep the fruit fresh and the acidity firm. Mencía gives rosé bright red fruit and a floral character. The grapes are pressed gently and the juice fermented cool in stainless steel, which protects the aromatics and gives the wine its pale colour and clean line, with no oak. The colour is pale pink. The nose shows strawberry and red cherry with a floral, almost rose-petal lift and a touch of redcurrant. The palate is fresh and dry, the red fruit carried by crisp, citrus-edged acidity that keeps the wine lively and easy. The finish is clean and refreshing. This is a straightforward summer rosé. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It suits white fish, shellfish, salads and lighter poultry dishes.
