Cuatro Pasos 2023

Cuatro Pasos is a Bierzo red made entirely from Mencía by the Martín Códax winery, the Galician house better known for Albariño. The grapes come from old vines averaging 80 years across four properties in Otero, Hornija, Corullón and Valtuille, planted on the slate soils of the higher parts of Bierzo. Slate drains freely and retains daytime heat, helping the late-ripening Mencía reach maturity while the altitude and cool nights hold the grape's natural acidity and floral aromatics. This is a young, fresh style made without oak ageing, so the focus stays on bright fruit and the mineral character the slate gives the variety. It pours a vivid cherry red. The nose leads with fresh strawberry and black cherry lifted by violet and a subtle herbal note. The palate is light to medium bodied, with juicy red fruit, soft tannins and a lively acidity that keeps it fresh and easy to drink. The finish is clean and fruit-driven. This is a versatile red that can take a light chill in warm weather. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees, no decant needed, with lighter meats, charcuterie and grilled vegetables.
