An eleven year old Clarendon single cask finished in a whisky cask, where smoke, char and roasted notes have largely overtaken the Jamaican fruit, leaving a thin, rough, tobacco-edged spirit that struggles for its 61%, bottled by Crucial Drinks.
Description
Crucial Drinks bottled this Clarendon under its Rum & Cane label as a single barrel finished in a whisky cask, drawing on the central Jamaican workhouse. The whisky-cask influence here is heavy, and tasters found it dominated the spirit rather than complementing it.
The nose is whisky-led with smoke, roasted and burnt notes, and the palate comes across thin and diluted with a sharp, rough edge that feels lean for the strength. The finish stays smoky, charred, roasted and tobacco-tinged. Bottled at 61% from a pot-still distillation, it shows how an assertive finishing cask can overwhelm a Jamaican base, with little of the island's tropical fruit surviving the transfer. This is a divisive, smoke-forward bottling that will appeal mainly to drinkers who actively want a heavily whisky-influenced rum, and one to approach with that expectation rather than hoping for classic Clarendon fruit.
