Description
A Craigellachie of a 9 year old chosen by the bottler That Boutique-y Whisky Company, bottled at 52.5%, one of 397 bottles. Craigellachie is the bold, oily Speyside malt that anchors the White Horse blend. With age the meaty young spirit turns to pineapple, mango and a waxy depth.
The spirit was distilled in copper stills with worm tub condensers on Blue Hill spring water, to build a robust, sulphurous, full bodied character. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, vanilla and a tropical fruit over the meaty spirit. In these extractive early years the oak gives vanillin as vanilla and oak lactones as coconut over a robust, sulphurous malt. The meaty, oily spirit takes cask flavour well while keeping its robust, worm tub weight. It sits at the village of Craigellachie, where the River Fiddich joins the Spey by Telford's iron bridge. The distillery was founded in 1891 by a group led by Peter Mackie, the man behind the White Horse blend.
At 52.5%, undiluted, it is deep and fruity. Mango, wax and a meaty depth, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A dried fruit and a savoury, oily depth give it weight. The finish is long, oily and savoury. This is the worm tub malt of Craigellachie.
