Description
This Craigellachie was bottled by the bottler Sexywhisky, a 9 year old, distilled in 2013, bottled at 55.3%, one of 40 bottles. Craigellachie is the bold, oily Speyside malt that anchors the White Horse blend. Water comes from a local spring in the Blue Hill area above the village.
Worked through stills and worm tubs for a muscular, oily spirit, to build a robust, sulphurous, full bodied character. A sherry cask wrapped the muscular spirit in dried fruit and a nutty depth. At an extractive age eugenol lends a clove note and lactones a coconut, the spirit heavy, oily and robust. Most Craigellachie goes quietly into blends, a robust filler kept in part as single malt. The distillery was founded in 1891 by a group led by Peter Mackie, the man behind the White Horse blend. Refill oak lets the muscular Craigellachie character lead, malt and tropical fruit beneath.
At its natural 55.3% it is concentrated. Tropical fruit, malt and a warm spice, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Pineapple, malt and a savoury wax fill the middle. The finish runs meaty, waxy and warm. This is Craigellachie, the meaty heart of White Horse.
