Description
The bottler Dràm Mòr bottled this Craigellachie, an 8 year old, distilled in 2013, from cask 300594, bottled at 56.8%, one of 294 bottles. Craigellachie is the bold, oily Speyside malt that anchors the White Horse blend. It keeps its worm tub condensers, an old fashioned set up that builds a heavy, meaty, sulphurous spirit.
The spirit was distilled for the heavy, meaty spirit Craigellachie is known for, giving the heavy, oily spirit at its heart. It was matured in refill ex-Bourbon oak, vanilla and a tropical fruit over the meaty spirit. Young and extractive, the cask sheds vanillin (vanilla) and toasted sugars (light caramel) over the meaty spirit, the worm tub character still struck match sharp. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the meaty malt. Craigellachie is one of the last Speyside malts still built on worm tubs.
At its natural 56.8% it is concentrated. Malt, dried fruit and a savoury oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Pineapple, malt and a savoury wax fill the middle. A long, oily finish carries a tropical depth. This is a full bodied Speyside single malt of real character.
