Description
The Glasgow bottler Douglas Laing bottled this Craigellachie, a 16 year old, from cask DL 15991, bottled at 51.4%, one of 210 bottles. Craigellachie is a Speyside distillery in the village of the same name, famous for its muscular, meaty single malt. The distillery was founded in 1891 by a group led by Peter Mackie, the man behind the White Horse blend.
The spirit was distilled for the heavy, meaty spirit Craigellachie is known for, for the muscular, meaty make Craigellachie is known for. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak quiet behind the heavy spirit. Into oxidative maturity, slow air ingress builds fruity ethyl esters (pineapple and mango) over the oily, meaty depth. Years in oak round the spirit, the worm tub weight turning to pineapple and wax. Worm tubs give little copper contact, so the new spirit is heavy and full, mellowing with time.
Bottled at a cask strength 51.4%, it is rich. Meaty malt, tropical fruit and a waxy oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A baked fruit and a warm spice lift it. The close is long, fruit over a meaty malt. This is the muscular, meaty Speyside malt of Craigellachie.
