Description
The bottler Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottled this Craigellachie, a 12 year old, distilled in 2006, from cask 44.120, bottled at 62.7%, one of 214 bottles. Craigellachie was founded in 1891 by a consortium led by Peter Mackie of White Horse fame. Its malt has long been the muscular heart of the White Horse blend.
It was made in copper stills whose worm tubs build a robust make, for the muscular, meaty make Craigellachie is known for. Ex-Sherry wood added a dried fruit richness to the heavy, meaty malt. In integration lactones (coconut) and vanillin (vanilla) knit with the malt, the worm tub weight softening to tropical fruit. The robust make rewards long ageing, the meatiness giving way to tropical fruit. Worm tubs give little copper contact, so the new spirit is heavy and full, mellowing with time. The slow loss of the angel's share concentrates the oily, tropical core over the years.
At 62.7%, undiluted, it is deep and fruity. Tropical fruit, malt and a warm spice, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Pineapple, malt and a savoury wax fill the middle. The finish is deep, oily and savoury. This is the muscular, meaty Speyside malt of Craigellachie.
