Description
The bottler Cane And Grain bottled this Craigellachie, a 10 year old, distilled in 2014, from cask 3239, bottled at 46%, one of 264 bottles. Craigellachie is a robust, oily Speyside single malt made on worm tub condensers. Bacardi's John Dewar and Sons bought it in 1998, alongside Aberfeldy, Aultmore and Royal Brackla.
It was drawn off pot stills cooled by traditional worm tubs, building the old fashioned Craigellachie style. Ex-Sherry wood added a dried fruit richness to the heavy, meaty malt. Integration folds eugenol (clove) and vanillin (vanilla) into the malt, the robust body turning fruitier. The heavy, oily make is prized by blenders for the backbone it gives White Horse. Craigellachie is one of the last Speyside malts still built on worm tubs. Its malt has long been the muscular heart of the White Horse blend.
At 46% it is gentle, sweet and fruity. Meaty malt, tropical fruit and a waxy oil, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. The texture is full and oily, the fruit lifted by a meaty weight. Tropical fruit, malt and a savoury oak see out the finish. This is Craigellachie, the meaty heart of White Horse.
