Domaine Courbet farms organically in the Jura, and this Côtes du Jura red is pure Trousseau, the region’s pale, perfumed grape. Twelve months in oak frame its ripe cherry, red berry and gentle spice.
Description
Domaine Courbet, established in 1869 and now a dedicated wine estate, works organically in the Côtes du Jura in eastern France. This red is made entirely from Trousseau, a thin-skinned local variety that gives pale, aromatic and lightly structured wines. The Jura sits in the foothills below Burgundy, on marl and limestone soils, with a cool continental climate and a long autumn that lets Trousseau ripen slowly while holding its acidity. The wine ages twelve months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the wood softens the modest tannins and adds a light savoury frame without masking the fruit. It pours a translucent ruby. The nose leads with ripe cherry and red berries lifted by rose and dried herbs, with a touch of black pepper spice. The palate is light to medium bodied, with fresh acidity, fine tannins and an earthy, savoury finish typical of the region. This is a red that can take a light chill. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees with roast poultry, game birds or mushroom dishes.
