Bodegas Aragonesas makes this Garnacha from old vines in two estate vineyards in D.O. Campo de Borja, under the cold, dry north wind. Four months in French oak give a richly aromatic red of raspberry and cherry with floral lift, spice and ripe, generous fruit.
Description
Coto de Hayas Garnacha Centenaria is a single-variety Garnacha from D.O. Campo de Borja in Aragón, made by Bodegas Aragonesas from old vines in its Monte Alto and La Sarda estate vineyards. The climate is broadly Mediterranean with a strong continental streak, marked by long hot summers and cold winters, and shaped by the Cierzo, a cold dry wind that blows from the north through the year. That wind keeps the vineyard healthy and ventilated and helps the old Garnacha hold freshness through the heat, while low-yielding old vines concentrate the fruit. The wine ages four months in French oak barrels, a short pass that rounds the texture and adds a light spice and vanilla frame while leaving the ripe Garnacha fruit forward. It is deeply coloured and full bodied, with intense raspberry and cherry, a floral note, plum, liquorice and a peppery warmth from its 14.5 percent alcohol. The finish is generous and savoury. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, decanting young bottles briefly. It suits grilled red meat, roast lamb, slow-cooked pork and mushroom dishes.
