Description
Costers del Gravet is a red wine from D.O. Montsant, made by Celler de Capcanes from Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha and Carignan. The grapes come from vineyards between 15 and 60 years old at altitudes of 200 to 550 metres, across a mix of limestone, slate and clay soils that each add their own character and give the wine complexity. Harvest is by hand, followed by a double selection of the fruit. After alcoholic fermentation the wine ages 12 months in French oak, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds cedar, vanilla and a fine spice. It is deep red, with blackberry, plum and cassis, liquorice, dried herbs and a stony, mineral edge drawn from the slate and limestone. The palate is full bodied and structured, with ripe black fruit, firm tannin and a fresh line of acidity carrying into a long, savoury finish. The Cabernet brings backbone, the Garnacha warmth and the Carignan freshness. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant. It suits roast lamb, grilled beef and aged hard cheese.
