Salvador Batlle makes Còsmic Confiança in Alt Empordà from Garnacha Roja, farmed on biodynamic principles with minimal intervention. A natural, vegan rosé rested briefly in separate containers, it is light, fresh and fruit driven.
Description
Còsmic Vinyaters was founded by Salvador Batlle in Agullana, Girona, with a philosophy of preserving the environment and minimising intervention in the cellar, working to biodynamic principles. The project runs across two areas, and this wine comes from the cooler Alt Empordà in the far northeast of Catalonia, made from Garnacha Roja, a pink-skinned mutation of Grenache. Empordà is marked by the tramuntana, the strong northerly wind that dries the vines, lowers disease pressure and concentrates the fruit, while the proximity to the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees foothills lends freshness. As a natural wine it is fermented with native yeast and made with little intervention or added sulphur, and rested for around two months in separate containers before blending, which keeps the fruit clean and direct. The result is a light, pale rosé with aromas of red berries, citrus peel and white peach over a subtle floral and earthy note. The palate is dry, fresh and fruit driven, with bright acidity and an honest, savoury finish that reflects its low-intervention making. Serve lightly chilled at around 9 to 11 degrees, and as a living natural wine open it a little ahead.
