Luis Salazar’s Los Herreros is one of the single-grower cuvées from Cosecheros de Labastida in Rioja Alavesa. A blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo and Viura, it shows ripe cherry, plum and a fresh, floral lift over a light, savoury frame.
Description
Los Herreros is the wine of Luis Salazar, one of five growers in the Cosecheros de Labastida project in Labastida, Rioja Alavesa, each working their own vines. The blend is led by Garnacha and Tempranillo with a portion of the white grape Viura co-fermented in the old village style, which brightens the aromatics and lightens the body. Labastida lies under the Sierra de Cantabria, and its calcareous clay soils and cool nights give wines built on red fruit and freshness rather than power. The vines are farmed respectfully without synthetic chemistry. With little or no time in wood, the fruit stays vivid and the texture supple. The colour is a deep, vibrant cherry. On the nose there is ripe cherry and plum over redcurrant, dried thyme and a floral note, and the palate is light to medium bodied, juicy and fresh, with soft tannins and an earthy finish. This is a red that can take a light chill. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees with roast chicken, grilled pork or a plate of charcuterie.
