Description
Cosecheros de Labastida began in the 2020 harvest, a project of five growers in Labastida in Rioja Alavesa who farm and vinify their own grapes in the old cosechero tradition rather than through large industrial means. Espinobendito is a field blend of Tempranillo and Garnacha with Graciano, Mazuelo and the white grapes Viura and Malvasía, the kind of mixed old vineyard planting once common across Rioja. The vines grow on poor clay limestone soils at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, which shelters the area and feeds the cool nights that keep acidity firm. Fermenting the red and white grapes together softens the tannins and adds aromatic lift, a traditional method that gives the wine freshness and drinkability. The colour is a deep ruby. The nose shows juicy blackberry and red cherry, with dried herbs, a floral note and an earthy undertone. The palate is medium to full bodied, with ripe fruit, fine tannins and a savoury, lightly mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It pairs with roast lamb, grilled beef and earthy vegetable dishes.
