Cortijo Los Aguilares makes this young red near Ronda in D.O. Sierras de Málaga, blending Tempranillo, Garnacha and Syrah from vines above 900 metres. The high-altitude fruit gives a fresh, perfumed wine of raspberry, cherry and a floral lift.
Description
Cortijo Los Aguilares Tinto is a young red made in D.O. Sierras de Málaga by Cortijo Los Aguilares, an 800 hectare holm-oak estate near Ronda in Andalusia. Of that land, 19 hectares are planted to vines, set out in three plots of clayey-calcareous soil at more than 900 metres of altitude and farmed under integrated agriculture, avoiding herbicides and pesticides. The wine blends Tempranillo, Garnacha and Syrah. Altitude is the defining feature here: the high elevation brings cool nights and a wide day to night temperature swing that slows ripening, holds acidity and builds aromatic freshness, so even in the warm Andalusian south the wine stays bright and perfumed at 14 percent alcohol. The calcareous soils reinforce that freshness and lend a savoury edge. As a young red made for early drinking, it sees little or no oak, which keeps the focus on primary fruit and floral character. The colour is a vibrant cherry red. The nose shows raspberry and ripe cherry with a floral hint and a touch of pepper. The palate is fresh and medium bodied, with soft tannin, lively acidity and a clean finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits roast chicken and pork.
