A 35-year Long Pond from Corman Collins that trades big funk for vanilla, overripe tropical fruit and toasted oak, drinking soft and bourbon-leaning, bottled unsweetened from a single 1977 cask at an easy 50%.
Description
Bottled by Corman Collins under its Old Jamaique label, this is Long Pond distilled in 1977 and aged 35 years in ex-bourbon from a single cask at 50%. Long Pond is Trelawny's historic Wedderburn house, but with this much time in wood the funk has largely faded into mature, oak-driven territory.
Molasses-based and pot still, it shows vanilla, overripe tropical fruit and toasted oak on the nose, then a woody, roasted palate of vanilla and coffee that leans almost bourbon-like, with chocolate and coffee lingering in the empty glass. Little ester survives at this age, leaving a smooth, gently fruity, contemplative rum. At a moderate 50% it sips easily and is certified unsweetened, a soft, characterful entry into old Jamaican pot still for those who prefer wood and vanilla to raw hogo.
