Conde de Valdemar Crianza is a classic Rioja from Valdemar, blending Tempranillo with Garnacha and Mazuela. Aged 19 months in American oak, it shows ripe red berries, vanilla and balsamic spice in a fresh, traditional style.
Description
Conde de Valdemar Crianza is a traditional Rioja red from Bodegas Valdemar, a family with roots in Oyón in Rioja Alta going back to 1889 and a name for innovation since the 1980s. The blend is led by Tempranillo with Garnacha and Mazuela from the family's own vineyards spread across the D.O.Ca. Rioja. The region's blend of Atlantic and Mediterranean influence, with a continental swing between warm days and cool nights, ripens the Tempranillo while keeping the acidity and red fruit aromatics that mark this fresher style at 13.5 per cent alcohol. The clay and limestone soils lend structure and freshness. Ageing runs 19 months in American oak, longer than the Crianza minimum, and the American barrel is central to the wine's character, giving the classic Rioja signature of vanilla, coconut and sweet spice through slow oxygen exchange that also rounds the tannins. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose shows ripe red berries and cherry over vanilla, balsamic and a light leathery note. The palate is fresh and smooth, with soft, fine tannins, balanced acidity and a savoury, spiced finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. A versatile partner for roast and grilled meats.
