Description
Condado de Oriza Roble is a red wine made from Tinta del País, the local name for Tempranillo, by Pagos del Rey at Olmedillo de Roa in the D.O. Ribera del Duero. The vineyards lie on clay and sandy soils across the high plateau of the Duero valley, where summers are hot and winters cold, and the marked drop in temperature at night helps the grapes keep colour and acidity as they ripen. Clay holds water through the dry season and lends the wine body and grip, while the sandier patches bring a softer, more aromatic side. The grapes are fermented as a varietal Tempranillo, then aged six months in American oak barrels. American oak gives a more open, sweet spice and vanilla character than French wood, and the short time in barrel keeps the emphasis on fruit while smoothing the tannins through slow oxygen exchange. The colour is a bright cherry red. The nose shows ripe red berries, plum and a lift of vanilla and clove from the oak. The palate is medium bodied and rounded, with juicy fruit, gentle tannins, a touch of toast and a clean finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits grilled meats, roast pork and hard cheese.
