Juan Gil makes this organic Jumilla red from Monastrell grown on the dry limestone plateau of Murcia. Fermented young and unoaked, it shows ripe plum, black cherry and a peppery, spiced lift, with the warmth of a sun-baked southern vineyard.
Description
Comoloco is the entry red from Juan Gil in D.O. Jumilla, a high arid plateau in Murcia where Monastrell ripens fully under intense sun. The vines grow on poor limestone and chalky soils with very low rainfall, which restricts yields and concentrates the fruit. Jumilla sits at altitude, so warm days give way to cooler nights, and that diurnal swing preserves acidity and freshness in a grape that can otherwise turn jammy. The vineyards are farmed organically and the wine is certified vegan. Made for early drinking, it is fermented in stainless steel and bottled young without oak ageing, which keeps the focus on pure fruit and the variety's natural structure. Monastrell is naturally rich in tannin and colour, giving a deep purple wine of real density. The nose leads with ripe plum and black cherry over black pepper, dried herbs and a touch of clove. The palate is round and warm at 14.5 percent, with savoury earth and liquorice behind the fruit and a firm but ripe tannic frame. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits grilled lamb, beef stews and roasted pork.
