Comando G farm Garnacha on granite in the Sierra de Gredos at Cebreros, west of Madrid. Villanueva is delicate and aromatic, with red-berry fruit, floral lift and a fresh, mineral line, raised in cement and barrel for ten months.
Description
Comando G are the team of Daniel Landi and Fernando García, who rediscovered old Garnacha in the granite hills of the Sierra de Gredos straddling Madrid and Ávila. Villanueva comes from Cebreros, where decomposed granite soils and high-altitude vineyards give wines of unusual delicacy for the grape, with freshness and minerality in place of weight. The cool mountain nights hold acidity and preserve aromatics, and the team work away from heavy oak to let the site speak. Ageing for ten months in cement tanks and barrels keeps the fruit clean, the cement preserving freshness while the wood lends only a light structure and a slow softening of the tannins. The wine is pale, luminous ruby. The nose is floral and lifted, with rose, redcurrant and wild strawberry over a stony, peppery edge, while the palate is light bodied and ethereal, with silky tannins, bright acidity and a long, mineral finish. Serve lightly cool at 15 to 16 degrees Celsius in a wide glass. It suits roast duck, poultry and mushroom dishes.
