Description
Comando G work tiny plots of old Garnacha in the Sierra de Gredos west of Madrid, and Peña La Mora comes from a single 1.17 hectare site in the village of Navatalgordo. The vineyard sits at 1,200 metres on slate soils rich in quartz, an altitude that brings cold nights and a wide diurnal range. That swing slows ripening and locks in acidity and aromatic detail, while the poor stony soils keep yields low and concentration high. The wine ages sixteen months split between barrel and concrete; the neutral concrete preserves the bright fruit and floral character while the wood lends only quiet structure, in the lighter, perfumed style of high altitude Gredos Garnacha. Farming is organic. The wine is a pale, luminous red. The nose leads with wild red berries, cherry and rosehip over thyme, crushed pepper and a fine earthy minerality. The palate is light and fresh, with delicate tannins, vivid acidity and a long, savoury finish. Serve cool at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits poultry, game birds and earthy vegetable dishes.
