Comalats Marquesa is an organic, biodynamic orange wine from single-varietal Picapoll Blanc, grown by the Bonet family near Cervera in Lleida. Fermented and aged in clay amphorae, it shows dried apricot, orange peel and a savoury, earthy grip from extended skin contact.
Description
Comalats is the Bonet family winery in inland Lleida, working under the motto vins lliures, or free wines, since 1989. The estate sits in the Segarra landscape between the Forés mountains and Cervera, farmed organically and biodynamically with no additives. Marquesa is a single varietal from Picapoll Blanc, made as an orange wine in clay amphorae. The grapes are macerated on their skins and the wine ferments and ages in clay rather than steel or oak. Clay is porous, so the wine breathes slowly and develops an oxidative, savoury character without taking on wood flavour, while the extended skin contact draws tannin and phenolic grip from the skins. This is what gives an orange wine its texture and its amber colour. The continental Segarra climate, with warm days and cool nights at altitude, holds acidity and keeps the aromatics defined. Expect a deep golden amber, a nose of dried apricot, orange peel, chamomile and crushed dried herbs, and an earthy, almost nutty undertone. The palate is dry and grippy, structured by skin tannin and carried by firm acidity, with an almond and honeyed savour on the finish. Serve at 12 to 14 degrees in a broad glass. Good with white meats and mushroom dishes.
