Description
Codigo 1530 Barrel Strength Anejo is a 100% Blue Weber tequila from the Varo distillery in Amatitan, in the Jalisco lowlands, made entirely from fully mature lowland agave. It is matured for two years in French oak barrels that previously held Napa Cabernet, then bottled at a robust 44% without dilution to barrel strength, an anejo built to be drunk neat. The house states it uses no added colour, flavour or sweetener, leaning on the wine cask alone for character.
The agave is cooked under low pressure in autoclaves and pressed on the brand's own roller mill to draw the cleanest juice from the first press, with Amatitan spring and rainwater filtered through volcanic soil. The nose layers roasted oak, cooked agave and dark chocolate with caramelised vanilla, tobacco, orange peel and cinnamon. The palate is warm and robust with wood, cooked agave, whiskey notes, vanilla, butterscotch, caramel, tobacco, oak and leather. The Cabernet cask is the signature, giving this lowland anejo its dried fruit weight.
